Keep it Between You and Me and the Neighbors is an exhibition centered around the use of objects as hybrids between painting and sculpture. Its curation was ultimately decided through direct response to the gallery it is shown in, though there is a general method to the layout. Made up of roughly 25 to 30 individual pieces, the space is typically divided into 6 sections. The first piece to greet the viewer is a found section of a fence painted on and free standing as a stage prop. There is a wall left with nothing on it but an eye-screw tethered to the top of a sculpture of a plywood chair silhouette hinged to a base mirroring the chair silhouette atop a carpeted plinth. The lighting specifically highlights the wall attachment and casts a shadow of the chair silhouette onto the ground opposite the direction of the base chair silhouette. Next, a wall hanging painting made up of found materials stands alone. A free standing sculpture made up of plywood covered half in white paint and half in wood grain patterned fabric surrounding a found window fixed atop painted cinder blocks also stands alone. A large wall configuration combines roughly 20 individual found object-based pieces that have been broken apart and arranged into a large composition that stretches from the top of the wall to the floor and across the majority of the wall. Lastly there is a flag that takes the images of the wall configuration and abstracts their imagery into a Texas flag inspired design hung on a traditional wall mounted pole.
